The About Thyme project took root in August 1994. Looking for a
way to combine their various backgrounds and influences, Jacqul McShee,
Gerry Conway and Spencer Cozens came together to write and
arrange new songs. They recorded at The Elephant Recording Studio in
Wapping, London, from January to March 1995, with first class sound
engineer Matt Butler. The result is About Thyme, an outstanding collection
of original and traditional songs, drawn from their various folk, jazz and
world music influences.
About Thyme features many of the musicians
with whom Jacqui, Gerry and Spencer have worked over the years. These
include Ralph McTell (vocals), Albert Lee (guitar), Mike
Mainieri (vibes), John Giblin (bass) and John Martyn
(guitar). The diverse styles of all the musicians appearing on the album
combine to produce recordings full of vitality and freshness.
Released in the UK on July 24th 1995, About Thyme reached number one in the Folk Roots magazine folk album chart and has received excellent reviews in the British music press:

"About Thyme is that rarest of albums: one made up of multifarious influences that don't so much work well together as take over the job entirely." - TIME OUT Sept.'95
"traditional songs like Lovely Joan and The Wife Of Ushers Well are dusted down with skill and sensitivity" - Q MAGAZINE Oct.'95
"Theres nothing fey or unbearably genteel about the way these traditional numbers are tackled - the full drama and intensity is intelligently squeezed from each song through unpredictable soundscapes and inspired production." - FOLK ROOTS Oct '95
